Happy December everyone!
Here at The County Kitchen, we are well and truly up to our elbows in mixture, baking away making lots of yummy Christmas treats for you all. Candy Cane Brownies, Christmas Cupcakes and Spiced Shortbread just to name a few, but watch this space to see what else is cooking in our cosy kitchen!
Now we all know that Christmas Carol about the twelve days of Christmas, and how some lucky lady was given twelve fabulous gifts from a courting gentleman… But did you know that the said carol we all know and love originated in France, before being published in England in the 18th century as a children’s memory game? Or that it is traditionally sung on the eve of the Twelfth Day of Christmas (6th of January) before feasting on Kings Cake and Mince Pies to mark the start of Epiphany? Amazing where all those Christmas songs and tales come from isn’t it.
Whilst talking to various friends and members of my community, it occurred to me that not many of us actually know when the twelve days of Christmas actually are. For the most part, we seem to think it is the twelve days leading up to Christmas, not preceding it. So, for those who would like to be enlightened, the Twelve Days Of Christmas fall between Christmas Day on December 25th and January 6th, when Epiphany starts and we all feel the need to give something up for 40 days.
So with the sound of carol singing as our inspiration, The Country Kitchen thought this festive month would be perfect to do a little experimenting in the kitchen, and come up with a bunch of Christmas-inspired goodies. So, over the next few weeks leading up to Christmas (deep breath, all will be fine!) and up until January 6th, when Christmas officially ends, The Country Kitchen will be posting a new recipe for each and every one of our ‘Twelve Bakes of Christmas’. How exciting! I literally can’t wait to get baking and sharing how it all goes with everyone! And you know what that means don’t you… You can now make our delicious treats in the comfort of your own kitchen, adding whatever ingredients you want should you choose to adapt our recipes to your own personal tastes. Who needs Santa when you have The Country Kitchen?
The first post for The Twelve Days of Christmas will be up this week, so keep your eyes peeled and your mixing bowls at the ready!
